Of proud British origins, Flannel fabric was first conceived in the 17th century as the preserve of Welsh farmers. These early pioneers discovered that when brushed on both sides fabric becomes sturdier, providing a thicker, more durable and insulating layer without losing its comfortable feel. Flannel would soon become the go-to fabric of the times for wet, cold and windy climates.
It was this relatively low-tech, high performance design that saw Flannel Shirts adopted for use by soldiers as early as the American Civil War through to now, frequently being sported by elite military units across the world.
